2.2 Hip-hop in Step Up
According to All You Need To Know About Street Dance by Qiu Shan, in recent years, most of those Hollywood movies basing on dancing themes sing the praise of youth; advocate to struggle for life and true love as well. Wild Style in 1982 introduced Bronx Hip-hop culture in an authentic way. In 1984, Beat Street record the fantastic battle between Rock Steady Crew and New York City Breakers in Roxie roller-skating rink. And -- Breaking was a typical movie that had to be mentioned. It made a difference on Chinese adolescence. At that time, more and more Chinese families could afford video tape recorders. After Breaking was introduced to China, we saw a boom in popularity and imitation of Funk Style Dance. This is the first time that street dance was popular in China. Then in the 21st century, there is still no lack of this kind of movie. For instance, Save The Last Dance(2001), Honey(2003), You Got Served (2004), High School Musical(2006)[2].
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. People hold different idea about Hip-hop. And the “Hamlet” in Step Up series of film is absolutely powerful, energetic and positive. Plenty of examples can be found in the movies.
