A Study on David Hawkes’ Translation of the Dietetic Culture in The Story of the Stone Abstract Hong Lou Meng as the representative of Chinese traditional literature, has become an important media for the westerners to know Chinese traditional culture because of its rich cultural content and profound cultural deposits. So the translation of Hong Lou Meng has never stopped since the appearance of its partial translation in the 1930s. Among all the versions, the one translated by David Hawkes and John Minford is the most widely accepted and popular one in the western world so far due to the easy accessibility and fluency of its language as well as the naturalization of the culture in the original book.48028

Dietetic culture as one of the important parts of Chinese culture undoubtedly has its presence in Hong Lou Meng. However, because of the profound cultural information behind, it is not easy to translate it accurately and fluently into the language easy to be accepted and understood by western readers. In this paper, the author tries to analyze Hawkes’ translation of the dietetic culture in Hong Lou Meng by pointing out the existing imperfections and also the advantages of his translation. Hopefully, it can help with the better transmission of Chinese culture though with meager strength.

 论霍克斯对《红楼梦》中的饮食文化翻译

摘要《红楼梦》作为中国古典文学中的代表作,历经时间的考验与洗礼已然成为了外国读者了解中国传统文化的重要媒介之一,因此,翻译界对《红楼梦》的研究从十九世纪三十年代出现《红楼梦》的节译本以来就从未停歇。而在《红楼梦》所有的英译本中的大卫·霍克斯和闵福德的合译本迄今为止是在西方世界最受欢迎的一个版本。该译本成功实现了语言的归化使得本来难以为西方读者理解的内容变得通俗易懂,很好的完成了文化传播的使命。

饮食文化作为中国文化中不可获取的一部分,在《红楼梦》中对其的描写自然也不可或缺。然而如何将这种带有的深厚文化背景的饮食文化内容巧妙地、准确的翻译成易懂、易为西方读者接受的文字却是具有挑战性的。因此本文就霍克斯对《红楼梦》中饮食文化的翻译稍作分析,希望通过指出其不足以及可取之处为中国文化的传播贡献微薄之力。
