Abstract Film, as a cultural form to entertain people, is an important medium for people in different countries to communicate. There are plenty of differences between cultures, so the translated version of film subtitles should embody   these characteristics. Although there have been a lot of studies on translation theory, film subtitle translation is only mentioned in some of the books and the study is far from being systematic. Although some theories about subtitle translation have been introduced to public, there is still a long way to go before establishing a perfect translation theory system for subtitle translation.60781

Taking film Ice Age as an example, this thesis first introduces briefly the Skopos Theory and subtitle translation studies abroad and at home. It mainly focuses on the application of the theory in subtitle translation. In Ice Age, there are many translation examples that can be studied from the Skopos Theory, which is worth studying. It is hoped that with this thesis, translators would have a deeper understanding of Skopos Theory and apply this theory in the subtitle translation in order to help audience enjoy films better.

摘要  电影，作为面向大众的一种文化传播形式，对国家间的文化交流起到了重要的作用。不同文化之间有很多差异，因此，对于不同国家的电影字幕翻译，要体现出它们原有的特征。虽然有很多著作研究了翻译理论，但是涉及到字幕翻译的理论却不多而且这些研究不系统。相关研究在期刊中也偶尔出现过，但是建立一个完整的字幕翻译理论仍然有很长的路要走。

在这篇论文中，将以电影《冰河世纪》为例子，介绍目的论和中外电影字幕翻译的研究。这篇论文将关注目的论在电影台词翻译中的具体应用。在《冰河世纪》这部影片中，有许多例子可以从目的论角度研究。该研究能使广大翻译者对目的论有更深刻的认识，将这个理论应用到翻译中以帮助观众更好地欣赏电影。

1. Introduction

Films and television programs are an artistic complex which combines language with culture closely and has a broad development prospect. Subtitles play a significant role in films and television programs because they embody characters’ feelings, story plots and arouse audiences’ echoes. Subtitles fully rely on films’ elements, such as characters’ traits, sound and visual effect. 

This thesis sets forth subtitle translation’s importance by introducing the art of films. At the same time, it also clarifies that the film translation is a recreation on the basis of original film subtitles through the introduction of film language’s characteristics and challenges that subtitle translators and dubbing voice actors may face. Therefore, translators are equivalent to creators who are mainly responsible for the success of translated films. However, creators must follow the lines in original language movies and then create films which conform to audiences’ aesthetics. This thesis puts forward the importance of Skopos Theory in the process of translating subtitles. Furthermore, it illustrates that the film subtitle translation is an art that needs translators to improve over a long period of time. This thesis firstly reviews on Skopos Theory, subtitle and subtitle translation studies at home and abroad.
