 1. Introduction

Agatha Christie (1890-1976), who is honored as the Queen of Crime, is best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, as well as the world’s longest-running play – The Mousetrap. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and a billion in 44 foreign languages. And Then There Were None is the story that made Agatha Christie the best-selling novelist of all time and is read all over the world in more than 50 languages. As for Christie self, she writes “It was so difficult to do that the idea had fascinated me.” It was an idea that is now the basis for many Hollywood horror films and has become a cliché to modern audiences, but it was Agatha Christie who was the first to do it and so successfully that the story has become her most adapted piece.

1.1 Background Information

In the development of detective stories, there are a number of elements enriching the forms and contents of this kind of literature, like horror elements, logical plots, riddles, suspense, etc. all of which make up a lot of exciting and intriguing stories. However, due to these elements, most of detective stories are largely identical but with minor differences. Therefore, among so many detective stories, what makes Christie’s more popular and outstanding than others’? Taking the book And Then There Were None as an example, we will have a better understanding of Agatha Christie’s success.

And Then There Were None is Christie’s bestselling novel with 100 million sales to date, making the world’s bestselling mystery. In this book, Agatha creates a murder game in an isolated island, and readers are all crazy about the special murder way. However, as far as I am concerned, the most brilliant is her depiction on the characters and the theme that is the ideals of justice she wants to convey in this story.
