2. Literature Review 2.1 Amy Tan and Her Works Contemporary Chinese-American writer Amy Tan (1952) was famous for the novel The Joy Luck Club which has exerted a tremendous influence since published in 1989. The novel even ranked New York Times’ bestseller list in nine consecutive months of that year. Therefore, Amy Tan famed into mainstream American literature circle. The Joy Luck Club was soon adapted by the ethnic Chinese director Wayne Wang and shone in the Hollywood in September 1993. 源:自*吹冰`%论,文'网·www.chuibin.com/ Actually, The Joy Luck Club is a mahjong party. Just Like Mahjong layouts, the story structure has four sections with four stories, which respectively narrated by four pairs of mother and daughter. The four mothers had experienced marital or social misery when they were in China. With their best expectation, they came across the ocean to the United States. They have to face predicaments, such as survival difficulties, language barriers, cultural differences, which excluded them from the mainstream of society outside. In despair they put all the desires and dreams on their daughters, and hope that the girls can totally think in the same way as Chinese, and always speak fluent English, so as to take advantage of the environment. However, contradictions and conflicts follow them all around in everyday life, which makes us filled with emotion. Fortunately, as time goes by, after a series of misunderstandings and conflicts, they begin to understand each other .The two generations go into harmony with their effort of love.
