1. Introduction Family is the basic unit of all human society. It reflects the ethical value of a society’s cultural characteristics and the unique features of a nation. People begin to learn about the world and their culture through the family they are brought in. What one thinks, how one acts, and even one’s language are all transmitted through the family. Family values are the core in the research of cultural values, and have a huge influence on people’s thoughts and behaviors. So if we want to know about the cultures of two different countries, it is necessary to know their family values. With the development of the science and technology, watching TV is more and more popular during our daily life. TV drama reflects a certain period of social phenomenon, or people’s psychological needs and values of a certain period. From TV drama, we can know about the culture and values of our country and other countries. So TV drama is a medium for us to study the family values. With the development of the global economy, cross-cultural communication between China and America are becoming more and more frequent and important. The research of different family values can help Chinese and Americans further understand each other; it can also help to avoid the unnecessary conflict caused by the mistakes in cross-cultural communication.
