1 Introduction

The topic should reach not only the general purpose of writing papers; it should train the ability of learning and gaining knowledge. This article is written with the help of symbol theory and text analysis, it discusses the symbol in the Da Vinci Code and has a deeper understanding of the culture background, literature and society. From this, we can improve the ability of language learning and practical application of English.

The paper is based on the original works and the understanding of the form of symbolism. It uses content analysis method, comparison method and literature and analyze and discuss the original works with own point of view.

2 Research Actualities

The Da Vinci Code describes that the Holy Grail has subverted the patriarchal power-the symbol of Christian men on the surface and suggests that women should take over the religious art. In addition, at many points in the novel mentioned primitive religion and worship of the goddess. The novel seems showing the author's opinion and consideration of women problems in deep concern, but it is for a focus on people and their living environment. People’s world should not be one dominate the other; it should be a natural relationship.

There is no denying that the author shows his respect for primitive religion and the so-called pagan culture, but not describes them as opposed to Christianity. Many pagan traces can be found in Christian tag. In Egypt the sun disc turns to the ring of light on the head of Catholic saints. And many other symbols and images in the article become an important clue to solve the drama and suspense. 3 The definition of symbolism, culture background and the source of symbols

3.1 Definition

Symbolism is a noun which derived from a Greek word Symbolon, it in the Greek meaning refers to “to pided a board (or a pottery) into two and a half, the host and the guest each holds one of them and pieces them together when meet again to show fraternal love ”1. After evolved several times, its meaning becomes “to use a form to represent a concept”1, which extended for on behalf of any ideas or things. All can express some things and concepts of symbol or item is called “symbol”. It is different from usual metaphors people use; it involves the essence of things, more profound than the metaphor’s meaning. What kinds of artistic effect it wants to find is not to make the reader understand what the author really wants to say, but to make readers understand there is profound meaning in it. Symbolism does not want to pursue pure clear and doesn’t want to pursue obscurity, either.
