In early 1960s, Western scholars studied address terms。 Roger Brown discussed the demonstrative use of second personal pronoun in Indo-European language in a sociolinguistic perspective。 Roger Brown&M。 Ford analyzed appellation system of American English, especially the use of titles and addressing someone by name。 Filmore made a great deal researches from the perspective referent and social functions。 

Chinese scholars also analyzed address terms systematically。 Zhao yuanren studied four kinds of address terms-pronouns, proper names, titles and kin terms in various relation and occasion in Chinese Terms of Address。 Tian Huigang made an overall discussion of interpersonal appellation system in Chinese and Western appellation system。 

From all above, all the studies lay a solid foundations for the further address terms research。 Since there’s no thorough study on basic address terms from the aspect of Politeness Principle, it’s essential to make a contrastive study between Chinese and English address terms to contribute to the intercultural communication。
