The cooperation principle is used to analyze how the speaker achieves certain purpose through violating the cooperation principle。

2。3。2 The Politeness Principle

Leech (1983) claims there are six maxims in the politeness principle including tact maxim, generosity maxim, praise maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim。 The six maxims strategies help to maintain social cohesion to avoid conflicts/ disharmony。 

"Politeness allows people to perform many inter-personally sensitive actions in a nonthreatening or less threatening manner。 (Holtgraves, 2002)

Politeness principle include two main strategies in the conversations, they are positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies。

 Positive politeness strategies are intended to avoid giving offense by highlighting friendliness。 These strategies include making compliments, creating agreements and using jokes。

Negative politeness strategies are intended to avoid giving offense by showing deference including questioning, hedging, and presenting disagreements as opinions。

The relationship between cooperation principle (CA) and politeness principle (PP):

2。4 Brief Introduction of “The Cask of Amontillado”

The story is set in a nameless Italian city in an unspecified year (possibly in the 18th century) and is about the narrator's deadly revenge on a friend whom he believes has insulted him。 Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive—in this case, by immurement。 Although the subject matter of Poe's story is a murder, "The Cask of Amontillado" is not a tale of detection like "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" or "The Purloined Letter"; there is no investigation of Montresor's crime and the criminal himself explains how he committed the murder。
