In 1962, Austin, the prominent Oxford philosopher first put forward Speech Act theory。 His work How to Do Things with Words on linguistic had an enormous impact, especially in its pragmatic branch。 Later, John R。 Searle is a famous American philosopher and is also Austin’s student。 Based on the Speech Act theory Searle put forward indirect speech acts, which was considered as a great breakthrough in pragmatics。 With regard to politeness study, since 1970s, this subject has been concerned with specifying by a lot of researchers。 And politeness, as a pragmatic phenomenon, has two influential models。 One is Face Theory, which was studied by Brown and Levinson, and displays politeness as the management of face。 And the other is Geoffrey Leech’s Politeness Principle, which describes politeness in terms of principles and maxims。 文献综述

Indirect speech acts and politeness are closely related with each other, in our daily communication, if we can properly apply indirect speech acts to achieve politeness, we can have a comfortable and favorable interaction with others, hence, to establish and maintain a good relationship with others。 Therefore, to study the relationship between indirect speech acts and politeness is very important and significant。 The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze and study the relationship between indirect speech acts and politeness and the factors affecting the realization of politeness through indirect speech acts, and finally propose some effective approaches to apply indirect speech act to achieve politeness。
