2.1.3 Generosity
Generosity is another quality the two spirits both have. The quality means thinking of others without considering himself and being rewarded from people who get assistance. Liu expresses that “generosity for chivalryman means doing a favor to others instead of always considering oneself” (Liu 67). Zhu Jia is the best example to explain this feature. He helps others very generously but lives very modestly, only wearing old clothes, eating one dish a meal and going out in a little cart. Zhu Jia is a very typical chivalryman that always uses his power and ability to help others who need help.
Cowboys are generous too. They are very generous and do not begrudge money. In the severe environment of the west, being generous to others is good to gain the friendship, which is helpful for cowboys to overcome any difficulties. People believe that cowboy would be friendly, even they are not rich, they still should be very generous.
