1。2 Significance and purpose of the study

As one of the basic forms of human interaction, cooperation has penetrated into every field of human activities。 Education is one of the most important aspects, and it is becoming more and more international (Li & Xie 76)。 Cooperative learning is of great significance to the development of modern teaching。 It opens up an interactive and cooperative teaching model that helps to learn English。 Under the background of the new curriculum reform, cooperative learning has profound significance in English classroom。

In order to improve the English learning achievement of middle school students, this paper explores the practice of cooperative learning in English teaching, pays attention to the cooperation of students in the classroom, and promotes students’ learning passion and interest in learning。 In teaching process, the students should be grouped scientifically and reasonably。 Through the cooperative group, students can improve English achievement and English language ability。 At the same time, students can actively participate in the class。 As a result, cooperative learning will improve students’ ability of communication and cooperation。 Therefore, the study has positive practical significance。

2。 Literature Review

Cooperative learning is a kind of creative and effective teaching theory and strategy which is widely adopted by many countries。 It had a long history, and it used by a lot of countries and regions around the world (Wang 62)。 As there are some differences in the practice of cooperative learning in different countries, the understanding of the notion of cooperative learning is also different:

“Cooperative learning is a general term for organizing and promoting classroom teaching,’’ says Sha, who is an important psychologist at the University in Israel。 “ The cooperation among students in the learning process is the basic characteristics of all these methods。 According to the organization of group activities, the students achieve the cooperation between peers。’’ (Sha 16)

For Chinese education, cooperative learning is still quite a new notion, some people urgently introduce it。 Guo Shiming, and Xu Maoyuan are two of the major figures。 In Guo’s book, he explored in detail of theoretical basis for the formation of a variety of cooperative learning techniques and skills (Guo 25)。

Chinese famous scholar Wang Tan thinks that cooperative learning is a kind of  teaching strategy that aims to contribute to students’ mutual cooperation in heterogeneous groups so that they can reach common learning goals, and teachers give students rewards according to the group’s overall performance (Wang 67)。 Wang Tan is one of the earliest experts in China to engage in the theoretical research of group cooperative learning。 His definition particularly emphasizes the functions of heterogeneous groups and relevant methods of evaluation。 

To sum up, from the above definitions, we can conclude that group cooperative learning is a kind of teaching approach that under the guidance of teachers, team members cooperate and communicate with others to achieve common progress and goals。 In other words, the concept of cooperative learning can be understood from the following aspects: First, it is organized by the teachers, so that the students learn together, and it is a process of interpersonal interaction, team members of the collaborative group are to achieve learning objectives; Second, cooperative learning has a clear goal-oriented, in order to achieve group learning objectives, students can use the dialogue, discussion, debate and other forms to solve problems。 Thus obtain the best way to achieve learning objectives; Third, cooperative learning has its solid theoretical basis, target value and implementation strategy。 Therefore, it has been gradually developed as a new type of modern teaching model。
