The original text has six sections and narrates household affairs to cherish the memory of relatives with the main line of the collapse and reconstruction of Xiangji Pavilion。 The first paragraph describes the changes of reconstructing Xiangji Pavilion before and after to show the affection for the home library—Xiangji Pavilion and reflect a feeling of cheerfulness in delight of life。 The second paragraph depicts the separate situation after elder generation’s breaking up the family and living apart。 The writer recalled the past things about his mother and grandmother, and he was frustrated for his talent。 The third paragraph describes that the writer studied hermetically。 The fourth and fifth paragraphs, the writer recalls those happy days which he and his wife spent together in the home library。 The last paragraph, the writer expresses his nostalgic feelings with the help of the grown loquat tree。

1。2 Introduction about translators of two English versions

Yang Hsien-yi learned all the classics and eight-part essays well and possessed Chinese traditional Confucian education。 Gladys Yang was born in China and became an excellent Sinologist in Britain education system。 They both pursued their studies in University of Oxford。 Yang was majored in the literature of ancient Greece and Rome and the literature of ancient France and Britain。 Gladys was majored in Chinese literature。 Therefore, their English proficiency is very professional。 As a result, their translation style has a good combination of Chinese and Western elements which contains a faithful and fluent translation branch, integration of literal translation and free translation and integration of domestication and foreignization。 They are dedicated to translating and disseminating Chinese classical culture, including ancient proses and classic works, poetry of Tang and Song dynasties and modern proses。 (Li 24) 

Liu Shicong is a professor of translation in Nankai University and the tutor of Ph。D。 students。 He has been engaged in teaching and translation for many years。 When it comes to translation, he holds that literal translation is language art, which means the supreme state of them is reproducing the lingering charm of the original text, from the text transformation angle。 The lingering charm of the translations means that artistic connotations of the original text are fully exposed to foreign readers by concise and graceful translation。 The translator appreciates the writer’s spiritual shackles and aesthetic sentiment through reading and analyzing, then, he delivers all the feelings through the language media。 This artistic appeal created by original writers and translators can arouse foreign readers’ sympathy。 The lingering charm of the writings especially proses can be pided into three parts。 First, the rhyme of proses is not fixed but special。 Second, the atmosphere of proses is humanistic and cultural。 Third, the writing style of proses writers is special。 (Liu 4)

2。 Literature Review

2。1 Previous studies on English versions of A Record of the Xiangji Pavilion

There are some English versions of A Record of the Xiangji Pavilion。 The two English versions of A Record of the Xiangji Pavilion written by Yang and Gladys couple and Liu Shicong are the most influential versions among of them。 Some translators have studied on different translated versions of A Record of the Xiangji Pavilion from the perspective of translators’ subjectivity and the perspective of adaption and selection theory。 

When it comes to express the original writer’s feelings, from the perspective of subjectivity, Liu’s translation focuses on the part of Gui’s lamentations of his dead wife by using the personification。 While Yang and Gladys apply raises-first-then-falls pattern to the translation, they want to show the positive feeling of the original text。 (Zhou and Cui 2)
