Title  Interpretation of Embedded Nietzscheism in Jack London’s The Sea-Wolf and Martin Eden
Abstract
Jack London is an American author whose works, specifically The Sea-Wolf and Martin Eden, are deeply influenced by Nietzscheism. The protagonists of the two novels, Wolf Larsen and Martin Eden, are representative Nietzschean supermen who are superior in intelligence and strength, and have the will to power. However, while they are above others, they are, inevitably, isolated from the society, and their inpidualism will ultimately lead to their self-destruction. On one hand, London, describing socialism as group inpidualism, seems to be fascinated by the superman theory, on the other hand, as a socialist, he has to oppose Nietzsche’s inpidualism. This paper reveals London’s ambivalent attitudes toward Nietzscheism and explores the ideal society that London advocates under the influence of Nietzscheism through his depictions of his famous supermen characters.

1 Introduction
1.1 Jack London and His Works
Jack London (1876 – 1916) was an American writer, journalist and social activist. London read widely and was influenced by a variety of philosophers and thinkers among whom the most well-known were Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer, Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche. Therefore, London’s works often deal with socialism and inpidualism, and reflect ideas of naturalism and Darwinism. As one of the most popular writers of his time and the best-selling American author in the world, London was productive in his writings, including The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Iron Heel, and the short stories “Love of Life” and “To Build a Fire.”
