Most of Salinger’s time during the war was spent in counter intelligence team which was affiliated to the 4th infantry pision. On Normandy landing day, 5 hours after the attack, Salinger went from Utah beach to land. In the winter of 1944, he participated in the battle of Huertgen and the battle of Hulge. Meanwhile, the process of the liberation of Europe was the most vicious fight that Salinger had ever experienced. The 4th infantry pision was suffered great losses, Salinger had said in his letter that he was also traumatized. During the attack on Berlin, he attended the battle and insisted for 11 months without rest. Then, by the summer of 1945, after the German surrender, Salinger had a mental breakdown and lived in the army hospital for a long time. After leaving the hospital, during his stay in Europe, he wrote the first paper which said in Holden Caulfield’s tone. After that, The Catcher in the Rye was really started. The story was firstly called I’m Crazy.
1.2 The Catcher in the Rye
The Catcher in the Rye is a story about a rebellious teenage schoolboy named Holden and his quixotic experiences in New York, taking place in December, 1949. The character is a middle-school student, the family background in the wealthy middle class family. Although he is only 16 years old, but stands head and shoulders above others compared to the average man. After being expelled from the school for his poor academic performance, Holden packs up and leaves the school in the middle of the night after a physical altercation with his roommate. He takes a train to New York but does not want to return to his family and instead checks into the dilapidated Edmont Hotel. Holden spends a total of three days in the city, and this time is characterized largely by drunkenness and loneliness.
