1 Introduction
Jane Austen was born in a priest family. She had a low social status in that times but she enjoyed a high reputation in literary history, called “The Shakespeare in Women”. After reading her Pride and Prejudice for a few times, readers still can find the humorous points in her sentence and smile by heart. And every time a new image of the main character will jump into your eyes because an outstanding novel writer often has a good command of abilities to build complex images to show the complex characters which make the novels to have more vivid details.
In this thesis, I will focus on the analysis of characters’ personalities to make a comprehensive understanding of Austen’s view of marriage. The personalities of figures are shown from various elements in this novel, such as the dialogue of figures, five different marriages. And different personalities result in different marriages in story. I think Austen masters the skill of drama. She does not let us know what the figure is like, but just characterize the figure to play, thus it can be seen that Austen is a master who is brilliant and a hermit behind the scene. She makes the characters themselves advance the plot.
People always think Pride and Prejudice as a work which tells us economic power, family background’s big influence on the selection and progress of a marriage. One should take these two elements into consideration before making a marriage choice. As for me, I agree the view of economy and background. But we can’t forget love playing a dominant role. To find love, couples always fit together with their widely different personalities, especially in modern society. The book takes considerable amount of ink on characters’ image-building and making amazing plots. From amazing plots, we can conclude that the personality plays definitely important role to effect the progress of marriage.
