On the Student-centered English Vocabulary Teaching Model in Middle School
I. Introduction
There is no doubt that English as a national language is now studied widely by numerous nations all over the world, so do Chinese students. Chinese students start to learn English in middle school even in primary school, while there is a phenomenon that although they begin to learn English so early, they are not willing to communicate with their foreign language teachers or other foreigners. The reason is not that they don’t want to speak but they don’t know what to speak or how to express their meanings. In other words, they are afraid to make mistakes because of lacking vocabulary. Without enough English vocabulary, it is impossible for a student to speak English, write English composition or translate English articles and so on. Thus vocabulary plays an extremely basic and important role in English.
It is true that there is no existence of language without vocabulary. So vocabulary learning should be taken as the center of learning all kinds of languages. Therefore, English vocabulary teaching is a very important and necessary part in English teaching. In the process of vocabulary teaching, students aim to store sufficient vocabulary so that they can rightly express their ideas, while teachers play the role of teaching. In order to find a sufficient way to teach vocabulary, many scholars have done some researches on it. One of the famous ways is the student-centered teaching model, which has been applied by many researchers. And many research results proved that it is very suitable for students to recite English vocabulary.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the student-centered teaching model and then apply it into the real. This paper will provide the general knowledge of English vocabulary and the traditional teaching model and then offer the general knowledge of student-centered vocabulary teaching model. Finally some strategies based on this model will be put forward after the application.
