Prototype theory is one of the core theory of cognitive semantics. Cognitive linguists believe: the prototype with varying degrees of typicality. Cognitive linguistics not only study a single category, but also to explain the relationship between synonyms projection between different areas, which involves the metaphor and metonymy. Metaphor is projected from the source domain to the target domain. This projection is the result of experience and understanding. The same as the metaphor, metonymy is based on the basic experience of the people, and its essence is conceptual, is spontaneous, unconscious cognitive processes. Metaphor is projected between different cognitive domains, unlike metaphor, metonymy is in similar or different cognitive domains associated with a prominent thing instead of another thing.
In addition color is not inherent to the object, person can only through the surface, and senses reflected light of the degrees to obtain color vision. Everything in the world has its own unique color attributes. People use color terms to describe this word, so color terms become an important part in modern Chinese vocabulary system. Color terms not only reflects the objective material of physical properties, but also reflects the understanding of the objective world and the generalization. Thus, this paper uses metonymy, metaphor and prototype theory in cognitive linguistics to analyze English and Chinese color terms and its meaning.
