Abstract The Old Man and the Sea is written by Ernest Miller Hemingway, a famous American writer in the 20th century. It is about an old fisherman who fights against the sharks bravely to protect his victory the big marlin. On the basis of relative theories and the status of Hemingway and his novel The Old Man and the Sea and by means of literature study review and statistical case method, the paper focuses its attention on the analysis of the multiple characters of Santiago. Accordingly, this paper reveals that even when all is lost and seems hopeless, a faith and willful heart will overcome anything. Hopefully this paper will be beneficial to make people learn Santiago’s spirit of never yielding and establish a positive outlook on life.

An Analysis of the Multiple Characteristics of Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea
I. Introduction
Ernest Miller Hemingway is an American journalist and writer. He is considered one of the most famous writers in the 20th century. Hemingway was born in the suburb of Chicago city, and he killed himself in Idaho in his old age. Hemingway’s feelings of life are very complex. He has been married for four times. He is the representative person of the “Lost Generation” writers, and his works shows a confused and anxious feeling to life, the world and the society. Hemingway won many awards all his life. During the First World War, he was awarded the silver medal for bravery. In 1953, he won the Pulitzer Prize for the novel The Old Man and the Sea, and this novel won the Nobel Prize for Literature for Hemingway in 1954. In 2001, Hemingway’s two works The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell To Arms were regarded as the one hundred best novels in the 20th century by the modern library of America. Hemingway is known as the spirit of National Monument, and he is the founder of “News” novels. His writing style is famous for simple and he had a profound impact on the development of literature and the literature of the 20th century in America.
The Old Man and the Sea was a novel written by an American writer called Hemingway in 1952. It was the author’s last work which was published when he was alive. After it came out, it caused a strong reaction in the world, and it caused a “Hemingway hot” in the literary circles at that time. It once again proved Hemingway’s unshakable status and remarkable achievements as a novelist in the twentieth century to all the people. The Old Man and the Sea is a perfect work for Hemingway in his later years. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954 by this novel. The Old Man and the Sea is the crystallization of Hemingway’s personal world outlook and outlook on life. It is one of the most influential novels in European literary in the 20th century. It has a great impact on the development of European literature. It reflects Hemingway’s philosophy of life and moral, the fighting spirit and positive optimistic attitude towards life.
