Title Brief Analysis of Politeness Principle In
Cross-cultural Exchanges
Abstract
Politeness is a universal principle, for it can be observed in all cultures and societies. This paper first introduces the previous study of the politeness principle, and then lists several typical examples in our daily life to show the embodiments of politeness principle. It attempts to analyze the differences of the difference between Chinese and western politeness principles. The study aims to find out the differences from the aspects of Self Denigration, appellation and greeting, and explore the factors which bring about the differences from the aspects of thinking patterns and cultural values. I hope this paper will do some help to cross-cultural communication.

1 Introduction
1.1 Introduction of Politeness Principle
With the advance of globalization,the cross-cultural exchange is becoming more and more frequent. There are many potential obstacles in the cross-cultural communication. Following the politeness principle is an important means to promote the cross-cultural exchange. However, the politeness principle is restricted by a lot of factors and is always described as flexible and various. This paper endeavors to analyze differences and their reasons by listing the embodiments of the politeness principle in the cross-cultural communication.
The politeness principle exists in each culture. It is the symbol of human civilization and the tool to maintain interpersonal harmony. It is a social convention which has the function of restriction to any member in the society. Following the politeness principle is a vital factor to achieve success in the cross-cultural exchange. And the standards of the recognition of different cultures to the politeness are different. The politeness principle in one culture is not necessarily suitable for other cultures. As a result, only by understanding and complying with the politeness principle of each other in the cross-cultural exchanges can we achieve the successful communication.
