The Importance of Cultivating Competence of the Intercultural Communication in Primary English Teaching

Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background

The study of cross-cultural communication originated from the 1960s in America. It becomes vital to implement the education of cross-cultural communication and to cultivate the competences in modern society. With the development of the society, the communications among people with different culture backgrounds are becoming more and more frequent. And the task of foreign language teaching is just to cultivate foreign language talents with high qualities and profound cultural accomplishments. It will increase the identification and containment among different culture by emphasizing the cultivation of cross-cultural communicative competences, thereby promoting the development and exchanges among different culture. Currently, the cross-cultural communicative education is mainly implemented in the language teaching of middle school and universities, with the relatively few researches in primary schools. With the lack of knowing the differences between the culture at home and abroad, students in primary schools don’t master the knowledge of cross-cultural communication very well. In addition, teachers hold positive attitudes toward the importance of cross-cultural communication in English learning, with shallow overall understanding on it. As we all know, it plays an important role in cultivating the competences in primary schools at the initial stage. Thus, we have to focus on the cultivation in primary schools.

1.2 Significance

The English teaching specialist Dr Chen Lin specially pointed out in “ English teaching curriculum standards” that “ it is inseparable of the understanding between language and the related culture. The ‘culture awareness’ of the listed whole teaching objectives in ‘English teaching curriculum standards’ requires children knowing the culture backgrounds in other countries, especially English countries and cultivating cross-cultural awareness.” Therefore, it becomes unnecessary,源)自(吹冰+文=论]文]网[www.chuibin.com to cultivate the competences in order to meet the requirements of new teaching curriculum standards.

Culture means the history, geography, local conditions, traditional customs, lifestyles, arts, behavior norms and values of one nation. People from different nations need communicate and understand through the application of language. So they need to start from the language to fully master the cross-cultural communicative competences. Primary school is the initial stage of learning English in which children are curious, interested and affirmative. In primary school English learning, the cultivation of cross-cultural communicative competences seems to be especially important, which determines the basis of the competences and reflects the teaching levels in China.
