1.1 Research Background

Since two thousand years, because of the gendered pision of labour, religion and so many other factors, women had been in a quite low status. Under the circumstance of that society, there was filled with unfairness between men and women. The inequality existed in many fields, from politics, culture to social sectors, such as the election rights, the work, education rights and so on. Women had no rights to create or even translate the literal works. Literature and translation are totally charged by male. Only few women were allowed to translate some religious works. With the development of society, social conflicts became more and more serious, which arose women’s feminism consciousness. In the nineteenth century, feminist movement flourished, the goal of which was to eliminate the discrimination against women in patriarchal society and fight for the equal status in politics and society between men and women. Feminism formed with feminist movement, and it is both a political movement and a social theory which challenged patriarchy. At that time, many female writers appeared. They took language as tool to against patriarchy and the works they created conveys feminism consciousness which proposed for equality as men.源[自-吹冰*`论/文'网·www.chuibin.com/

With the development of feminism movement, during the 1980s, gender consciousness permeated into the field of linguistic study, even in the translation. Meanwhile, translation study experienced “cultural turn”, which inspires scholars to study translation from cultural, political, historical and other non-linguistic factors. During cultural turn, cultural approach was adopted to the translation study. Translation is no longer regarded as a mechanical transformation. It was researched under the context of history, culture and politics. There are much similarity between female and translation. Translation has long been regarded as the secondary status like that of women in society. Viewed from the aspect of gender, over the past two thousand years, language creating and literary work was charged by male, and male usually described man’s life and world. Gradually patriarchal language came into being and controlled the creation and interpretation of text, which conveys ideology of patriarchal fatherhood. The image of female was built into the social role as male required. Because of the factors of religion, culture and so on, women are in low status, so the image of female was distorted and discriminated. In other words, female was attached to male and should be loyal to male. Male was totally in a ruling position and female was passive and submissive in the gender relations. Viewed from translation history, translation has always been regarded as subordination, derivation, and even betrayal of original text. All of translation, no matter how close it is to the original text, it’s always on the second position, which is impossible to be equal with the original text. Original texts and original authors had long been considered legal and authoritative. In contrast, translation and translators were deemed to be passive. The relationship between original texts and translation is just as male and female. Therefore the new gender perspective sprung up and combined with translation study. So, feminist translation theory came into being, which creates a new perspective of translation. The point of feminist translation theory is feminism consciousness. It serves for women, and makes women’s voice heard and strives for dignity and equality of female.
