2.3.4 Discrepancies of religion and custom on translating the introduction of tourist attractions
Religion has placed a lasting influence on people's life through human history. Both western and eastern people have religious beliefs that are part of their respective cultures. For most western visitors, they maybe not familiar with Chinese culture, therefore with the development of domestic tourist trade, more and more materials concerning it need to be translated into English. In order to make successful versions, translators should make some necessary and proper explanation on discrepancies of religion and custom when translating the introduction of tourist attractions.
The influence of religious and customary differences is quite common, for every country or ethnic has its own particular culture which is different from that of other countries. Chinese people are accustomed to thinking in direct way, but many westerners intend to make reverse thinking. For example, bamboo, pine and plum are regarded as “three friends in winter(岁寒三友)” in China, and Chinese people are very familiar with that when they visit Huangshan(黄山), but west visitors may not realize this. When a Chinese tourist visits HuangShan and sees all sorts of strange and unusual pine tree, it is quite natural for him to be reminded of the noble qualities of Pine: perseverance, resolution, etc., and then the unflinching will of a person. Perhaps a foreigner will not have the same association as a Chinese does. In order to make west visitors realizes this, translators would better add some background information about it. Then foreigners can understand the feeling of Chinese people better, without creating unnecessary misunderstandings.
