This thesis will simply analyze these two translation strategies by studying the subtitle translation of Kung Fu Panda I II and III with the purpose to present the application of these two strategies。 The translating strategies in these movies’ subtitle translation tend to domestication rather than foreignization in that there are full of Chinese characters and factors in Kung Fu Panda sense and the target movie viewers are Chinese。 In conclusion, translators should apply different strategies taking into consideration of different translation purposes and text types to reach their dynamic and concrete unity。 来*自~优|尔^论:文+网www.chuibin.com +QQ752018766*

2。 Literature Review

2。1 Review of domestication and foreignization

Friedrich Schleiermacher, in On the Difference Methods of Translating puts forward two ways for translation:one is to let the author remain there and lead readers to approach the author , and the other is to make the author approach readers while readers remain there。 (Schleiermacher, 276)  In The Translators’ Invisibility, Venuti regards the first method as foreignization and the second method as domestication。 (Venuti, 379)

The dispute of domestication and foreignization has a long history。 It has already been known that translators define domestication and foreignization by cultural orientation。 The domestication is inclined to the culture of the target language while the foreignization is inclined to the culture of the source language。 The domestication tends to provide a kind of natural and fluent version for the target readers, while the foreignization prefers to take the reader over to the source text and in turn to the foreign culture, making him or her see the differences。

In the history of Chinese translation, two translation strategies have their respective supporters。 Lu Xun, a famous Chinese writer and translator, supported the direct translation strategy, with the opinion that faithfulness is more important than fluentness。 However, Fu Lei, another Chinese famous translator, thought that it is spirit rather than structural that is more significant。 (Chen, 243) However, through many years of translation studies, it has become a consensus of major translators that both translation strategies have their own advantages and they complement each other in some cases and it is not a wise action that we separate them during the process of translation。(Sun,187) That is to say these two translation strategies are not opposite absolutely。

In order to present a good translation version, translators should combine them properly and they should make their respective advantages complementary to each other。 Nevertheless, how should translators combine them properly is still a question。 This thesis will simply analyze how translators should combine these two translation strategies and how are these two translation strategies complementary to each other through the analysis of the subtitle translation of Kung Fu Panda I II and III。
