According to Venuti, “foreignization translation tries to keep some certain characteristics of source language and culture, which can help target readers cultivate the awareness of cultural differences and thus offer them another different reading experience。 It is the cultural exchange that better realize the function of the text”。 He proposed, “The translator should highlight the differences between the source language and the target language and cultural aspects of the text by the translation。” (Venuti, 2001: 240) 

Looking back to the development of Chinese and foreign films, the choice of translation strategies is a dynamic process of development。 With the deepening of the degree of cultural communication and the change of the way of thinking of the translator and the audience, nowadays, when China output and import films, foreignization method is actively employed in the translation of film titles。 Weak cultures can reshape their cultural identity through translation surviving in the strong culture, and thus the status of weak cultures can be improved。 In addition, it can give full play to the role of language in cultural exchange and penetration, in order to achieve the purpose of cross cultural communication。 From the perspective of the cultural hegemony, foreignization is also an important way to realize the balance of cultural communication。 Adopting foreignization is beneficial to retain the cultural characteristics of foreign cultures, so that the readers can understand the culture of the source language better。(Cong Yue, 2002:129)

3。 Domesticating Translation of Chinese Movie Titles 

As a kind of art form, the film is a social product of culture and ideology。 The Film title, as a window through which the film content can be guessed, inevitably reflects the characteristics of a country's language and culture。 Therefore, the cultural information film titles carry should be taken into account in the process of translation。 Because of the huge difference in the cultural backgrounds, if some contents in the original text are directly transplanted into the target language through word-for-word translation, they may conflict with the cultural expectations of the target language readers, thus affecting the acceptability of the translation。

3。1 Purpose and Meaning of Domestication

3。2 Successful Examples 

The famous Chinese movie Farewell to My Concubine is taken from the title of a Chinese historical allusion, which Chinese audience can easily understand。 If it is literally translated as Xiang Yu, the Conqueror, Bids Farewell to His Concubine, foreign audiences will be hard to understand the profound meaning。 As most foreign audiences do not know Chinese history, they can get almost no tips from the translation。 Not to mention that this piece of history is just used as a clue telling us a story of the actors of the opera "Farewell My Concubine", showing us 50 years of love and hate, trust and betrayal, sincere love and homosexuality and the destruction and persecution of China’s "Cultural Revolution"。 Therefore, the translation of this title caught keywords Farewell and Concubine, implicitly reflecting the theme of the movie, suggesting the tragic tone of the movie 。We can say that the successful translation played a role in movie’s publicity。
