Title Discourse Analysis on American TV Show Revenge Based on Conceptual Metaphor theory
Abstract
Traditionally it was regarded only as figurative expressions or a kind of rhetorical skill, for which the study on it was mostly confined to the literary and rhetorical level. With the development of western cognitive linguistics, Lakoff and Johnson made a breaking-through by publishing their book Metaphors We Live By. They argued that people perceive their experience and the outside world mostly in a metaphorical way. Since then, metaphor is not only taken as a term of language, but a kind of thought and action of people. Till now, researches on conceptual metaphor usually focus on rhetorical, syntactical and lexical level, few on discourse level, especially spoken discourse. The metaphorical nature of conceptual system has been broadly acknowledged. Due to its systematic and coherent features, conceptual metaphor enables people to think systematically and coherently, thus leads to better understanding and communication. On ground of the analysis above, this thesis selects some samples from the American TV show Revenge randomly and discusses how conceptual metaphor acts in spoken discourse based on the conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson. And we find that conceptual metaphor through the spoken discourse makes the discourse a coherenent and vivid one, thus enables people to understand each other easily and smoothly.
