1。2。 Vanity Fair

  The title of Vanity Fair was taken from Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress It is also called A Novel without a Hero。 The scene of the story was the first half of the 19th century in England。The story  develops by two clues from the same starting point and finally reaches the same end。 Wherein a clue about a clever, selfish, indulgent restore poor orphan, Becky Sharp。 She tasted the taste of poverty, and was determined to control her own destiny to rid the hook。 She is evil, but successful。 She is an outcome of the dual function of the era and society。 Another clue is about a kind-hearted and clumsy woman who lives in the wealthy family, Amelia Sadley。 Amelia is a pretty and simple woman with good characters and pure love。 She comes from a rich merchant family, looking forward to the ideal love and trying to weave her own life with love。 She is poor, but happy。 Being deeply attracted by these two heroines’ distinct personalities and different fates, the author tries to explore the implied social reasons for their different encounters and views of love and marriage。

By analyzing the different characters,Becky and Amelia’s attitudes towards love and marriage and their fates, the purpose of this paper is to summarize the core of the moral concepts of the Victorian women and to explore the implicit social reasons。 Moreover, this article aims to not only complement the previous research on the fates of the two actresses, but also make women in modern society better understand their images and status so that they can play more important roles in social activities。

     William Makepeace Thackeray is one of the representatives of the English critical realistic writers。 Vanity Fair , as the representative of Thackeray, a number of critics hold their own views on it。 In the foreign countries, William Elkins in Thackeray's Vanity Fair pointed out that the main character was Becky, not Amelia。 However, Dyson’s Vanity Fair: An Irony against Heroes expounded that Vanity Fair was one of the world's most devious works due to its description of the characters, sharp irony and clear preaching。

     In our country, Gao Liping’s The Comparison of the Two Female Image:Sharp and Amelia- Reread Vanity Fair focused on the female status。 Wu Weiren in British Literary History and Selected Readings revealed the current situation in the capitalistic society in the 19th century。 Tan Zongyan in Positive Interpretation of Becky's Character stated that Becky was like a peacock and let us see a beautiful and intelligent female image; Shao JingJing’s Vanity Fair:two hero comparison mentioned that Becky had a very broad world and love to her was only a small part but Amelia devoted all her life to love。

     This article aims to help readers better understand Vanity Fair from different positions and have a deeper understanding of Thackeray through the analysis of the love and encounters of the two heroines in Vanity Fair。 According to Becky and Amelia , although the author used a satirical surface to depict the characters, he still held a sympathetic compassion in his heart。

     In addition,Simon de Beauvoir,a French writer who proposed feminist literary theories,said“women, as the other, have historically been associated with inferior nature, irrationality,weakness,tenderness,care and timidity,in contrast to male-identified ideas of rationality,resolution,bravery and so on”(Shu Jing 41)。By analyzing the two characters in Vanity Fair and describing the women’s social situation in the nineteenth century ,this article tends to help women in modern society realize their values and find their own significance of lives。

3。 Comparison of Becky and Amelia’s Fates in Vanity Fair

Becky and Amelia represent two extremes, but they are two interdependent people that can not exist alone, so we can see that their fates depend largely on the the social ideology。 According to the fates of Becky and Amelia , it is not difficult to find that Amelia is the victim of male power, so does Becky。
