Poetized Translation in Uncle Tom's Cabin: A Teleologic Perspective

I. Introduction

1.1 Introduction to teleology

In 1970s, as a translation theory of German functionalism, teleology turned up in the West. It defined translation as a combination of action theory and cross-cultural communication theory, which totally removed the constraint of equivalent translation. Teleology emphasized the influence of the translator's intention, the purpose of translation, and the influence of the translation. It broke the traditional text-centered theory, and made readers pay more attention to all translation and translator, the social effects and the communication function of the translation. So the study of translation theory may be more polybasic and the translation could be more meaningful.
