1.2 Significance of Study
Body language is an important media through which people communicate with each other. It refers to the patterns of facial expressions and gestures that people use to express their feelings in communication. In addition to practicing good vocal health and preserving our voices, there are many benefits for both teachers and pupils when the teacher implements effective body language.
Firstly, a teacher’s modeling through a nonverbal example rather than a verbal one is sometimes a more effective way to be understood and a quicker way of emphasizing the point. For example, games are an essential part of the primary school’s English teaching and the best way to introduce games’ rules is with your body language. Since pupils are lack of vocabulary, complex introduction can be understood by a small part of the class and the time will be wasted. With body language, the classroom management is simplified and the instruction is facilitated and not overly explained.
Secondly, English teaching is a key part of the school education. With the English teaching methods reform, more and more English teachers organize the teaching process in English. Teachers instruct the students and explain questions basically in English, and the students are also required to use English in class. Contemporarily, however, the students in the primary school can't speak very well; neither can they understand why they should use different tones in different time or situation; their vocabulary and expressive ability are limited as well. These limitations made it difficult to realize all-English teaching in the classes. According to the students' present level and practical situation, body language is required.
Furthermore, body language can reduce the anxiety in the classroom. Bolton states, the more I find myself using gestures, the more I realize how it helps all the students. (Sharyn and Jami, 2018: 57-62) If everyone is gesturing, then we are all speaking the same language. Students do not have to worry about fitting in or feeling foolish when they do not understand the meaning of the directions. They can actively participate without worrying about how they are perceived by others. Moreover, some characteristics of theories and abstraction of knowledge also require the vivid, dramatic and accessible gestures to make it specific and figurative to follow. As a result, the students' interest is motivated and the effect of teaching is greatly improved.
Through the study, it’s expected to understand the current situation of the application of body language in English classroom teaching in primary school and conclude some effective application of body language in English classroom teaching in primary school
