(2) Simplicity
This strategy indicates that in the process of subtitling, we must ensure the audience to gain the clearest imformation with a minimum of labor. Common words, simple phrases etc. are chosen to translate. Syntactical structure must be concise. Too long sentences,participle phrases and subordinate clauses should be extreme used or limited.
(3) Straightness
We should present the subtitle in a straightforward way, avoiding of the use of blending and annotation as little as possiple. When the picture or other parts can’t express the cultural imformation in a plane way, we can use annotation or other to explain them as simple as possible.
Other strategies also involves “translating for a particular group”“creative translation”etc. In the practice of subtitling, we should combine multiple strategies according to distinctive needs.
4. Analysis of Emotional Elements in The Big Bang Theory
4.1. A General Introduction of The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom premiering on CBS on September 24,2007. The show is centered on five characters: two physicists Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, a blone waitress named Penny, an aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz and an astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali. The four guys are intellect scientists, while Penny is an ordinary and carefree woman. And they are good friends. The story concentrates on the contrast and interaction between them in the daily life which is full of interests and amusements. This show not only reflects different perspectives on life but also convey comprehensive knowledge in a plain way that is educative and positive.
Emotional elements in a TV show mainly include three aspects: natural affection element, love element and friendship element. The Big Bang Theory mainly focuses on the friendship centering around the five actors, so the analysis of its emotional elements will emphasize the aspect of friendship.
4.2. Sample analysis of Emotional Elements
(1)Season 1 Episode 3:
(Scene: The Four guys are “fighting” for Azeroth sword)
Howard: Leonard,look out!
Leonard: Damn it ,man,we’re dying here!
Version1:
霍沃德：里奥纳德，小心！
里奥纳德：该死，我们要死在这里了！
Version2：
霍沃德：莱纳德，小心！
莱纳德：靠，我们要被团灭了！
This dialogue happens at the time the four guys are playing a battle game. According to the principle of function equivalence,we should correspond to the target culture . “团灭”is a popular game term in China, most people are familiar with it , and it can express a sense of humor, so version 2 is better than version1.
(2) Season 4 Episode 1:
Penny: I’m so digging the Shamy.
Version1:
潘妮：我要好好八一八谢米了。
Version 2:
潘妮：我要好好聊聊谢米了。
This dialogue happens when Penny heard that Sheldon has a girlfriend called Amy, whose nickname is Shamy. Penny is so interested in the gossip that she uses“dig”to express her curiosity for her friend. “八一八”conforms to the Chinese custom to express the gossip feeling so version 1 is better than version 2.
(3)Season 4 Episode 3:
Mrs Cooper: Leonard called. And he said that you were pining for a young lady.
Version1:
库柏女士：莱纳德打电话给我，他说你在思念一位年轻女士。
Version 2:
库柏女士：莱纳德打电话给我，他说你为伊人消得人憔悴。
The dialogue happens between Sheldon and his mother when Sheldon broke up with Amy. According to the strategies of subtitling, there we should use a straightforward way to describe Sheldon’s state. Version 2 adopts a poem sentence that is familiar to Chinese people. It’s better and more visual.
