Introduction

1.1Research background 

The process of translation is not only finding the equal target language with the source language, but considering the practical effects, especially the consequences among the target readers and society. Just like Tan Zaixi(2004)said “Translation is not just purely the action of linguistic, instead is an action rooted deeply in culture.Translation is the internal and between communication of culture. The translation equivalence is the source text equal to target text.” So in a way, the purpose of translation is multiple-layered and alternative. The moment of Peking has its multiple-layered choices. During the writing course, Lin focused more on the promotion of understanding and communication between eastern and western culture, and more important, he aimed to propagate Chinese traditional civilization to the world. All these can be seen from this great work’s translation strategies and theories. Although The moment of Peking is written in English to describe Chinese society and culture,the process of writing is the creation of Chinese-to-English translation.Lin Yutang apply the Function Equivalence to the work to express the culture with Chinese characteristics and show to west readers who can enjoy an exotic culture from it.
