Abstract Death of a Salesman is the representative work of Arthur Miller. The play tells a sad story about the protagonist, Willy Loman, choosing to commit suicide in order to leave insurance money for his sons. The paper focuses on the analysis of the causes of Willy’s tragic fate. The paper firstly introduces the author and his play Death of a Salesman as well as Willy’s tragic fate. Willy is a loser whether as a salesman, a father or as a husband. Then the paper analyses the causes for Willy’s tragic fate: such as, the social factor, Willy’s inner nature, and the influence of the American Dream. Finally, the paper draws the conclusion that Willy’s tragic fate is the results of the social environment and his own inner nature. The paper will help readers to have a profound understanding of the play and Willy’s tragic fate.

I. Introduction

Death of a Salesman, the representative work of Arthur Miller, is one of the most influential tragic plays written in the twentieth century. Death of a Salesman is a sad version of the American Dream and it also attempts to explore the implication of a life that men, not gods, are wholly responsible for their own tragedy. The play may be described as a tragedy of consciousness, and the imitation of a moral crisis in the life of a common man. Willy Loman is a complex and fascinating character. He devotes all his efforts to pursuing his American Dream. He convinces that the personality and being “well-liked” could bring success and that then could bring him wealth, freedom, respect and love. He passes his double standards of morality and his wrong dream of success to his sons and hopes that his sons would be successful for personality and being “well-liked”. However, due to his false idea he destroy his sons and make his wife suffer a lot. Eventually, Willy’s world collapses, and he chooses to commit suicide in order to gain the insurance money that his sons can make use of to achieve his dream. Willy Loman is a typical victim of American Dream and his tragedy is the tragedy of American society.
