The Analysis of Tess’s Tragedy in Tess of the D’Urbervilles

 Chapter one Introduction

1.1 Introduction of the writer

Thomas·Hardy (1840-1928) was one of the greatest critical realistic writers in England in the late 19th century. Hardy was born in a country called Wessex in England in1840. The natural environment here became the main background of his work. In 1862, Hardy headed for London, working as an architectural draftsman. Also, he trained for language in University of London., starting his writing. In his lifetime, he has published fourteen novels, forty-seven short stories and over nine hundred poems. Hardy was influenced by many thinkers, especially by Darwin and John Stuart Mill. So he combined different ideas to describe a real world .And he didn’t have faith in Christianity, leading to his novel full of tragic and bleak feelings. 

1.2 Introduction of Tess of the D’Urbervilles

Tess of the D’Urbervilles was written by Hardy in 1891.It’s a tragic story of a pure and beautiful girl. She is the oldest girl in the family, so she has to shoulder many responsibilities. In order to support the poor family, she is asked by his father to visit the distant relative——D’Urbervilles .Afterwards she is seduced by Alec, the son of a rich merchant. Then great changes take place in her life. She is pregnant and gives birth to a baby finally. But the baby is dead a few days later. Tess can’t stand the rumors, and she leaves home, moving to a far farm and working as a 源`自·吹冰.文/论:文'网,www.chuibin.com dairymaid. There, she meets Clare, son of a pastor. Then they fall in love and get married. On the wedding day, Clare tells Tess about his past orgiastic life with another girl. Tess forgives him and also tells Clare her past life. But Clare can’t forgive and abandon her leaving for Brazil. Tess is so sad without the letters from Clare. Then she meets Alec again, he purses Tess once more. Tess thinks it is hopeless to be with Clare .For life, she has no choice but to be with Alec. Finally, Clare comes back and tells Tess he still loves her. Tess is very painful and hates Alec deeply. At last, she kills Alec and runs away with Clare. And they live a short happy life. In the end, she was taken by policemen, and Tess was hung.
