Acknowledgments
One of the happiest things during the writing of this thesis is getting suggestion from people who have offered me their generous supports, with which I managed to finish the whole thesis more easily and ahead of the deadline. I would like to thank the following people for their contribution.
My deepest gratitude goes first and foremost to Ms. Wang Ying, my supervisor, for her constant encouragement and guidance. She has walked me through all the stages of the writing of this thesis. She has encouraged me to follow my own interest and take interpretation as the topic. Without her consistent and illuminating instruction, this thesis could not have reached its present form.
Second, I am also greatly indebted to the professors and teachers at the Department of English. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Yu Jing, who led me into the beauty of English language, Ms. Sun Hongying, who encouraged me and helped me out of depression during the last two years, and Ms. Yuan Bing, who brought me into the world of translation. They have helped me a lot during the past years.
Last my thanks would go to my beloved family for their love and great confidence in me all through these years. I also owe my sincere gratitude to my friends and my fellow classmates who spared time to listen to my complaints when I have difficulty writing this thesis and gave me great advice to work out my problems during the difficult course of the thesis.
Abstract
With the increasing number of international expositions and summits, interpreting, as the communication bridge in such activities, is drawing more attention from scholars. In that case, theories about interpreting arises, among which Interpretative Theory can never be neglected.
Interpretative Theory founded by Professor Danica Seleskovitch is the first systemic interpreting theory. The Theory holds that the target of interpretation should be the sense of the source language and interpretation is finished after three procedures, namely exegesis of discourse, de-verbalization and reformulation. And these two points make Interpretative Theory unique from other interpreting theories and contribute a lot to interpreting study.
This paper makes a study on Chinese-English interpretation from the perspective of Interpretative Theory. Firstly, the paper gives a brief introduction of the Theory from the perspective of its origin, target of interpretation, interpreting procedures and its contributions. In this part, the uniqueness of Interpretative Theory is talked about. Secondly, the paper talks about interpretation from different angles, where knowledge about the definition of interpreting and types of interpreting are given. Then, the paper analyzes the on-spot Chinese-English interpreting materials collected with the guidance of Interpretative Theory, and also gives reasonable advice. At the end of the paper, constructive suggestions are offered on how to perform an effective interpreting from the view of Interpretative Theory.
