On Xu Yuanchong’s Translation of Chinese Classical Poetry from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory
CHAPTER ONE  INTRODUCTION
1.1    Background of the Research
China is one of the four ancient civilizations in the world, with a long history and profound culture. Among all the manifestation of Chinese culture, the classical poetry, especially Tang poetry, is a beautiful pearl representing the essence of Chinese culture, which is a precious product of ancient people. Nowadays, these great poems still attract people’s attention and are under study both at home and abroad. China and the West are having more and more exchanges, not only in trade and politics, but also in culture. In this condition, Chinese classical poetry, as a representative of Chinese culture, has become the focus of people’s research. Both scholars at home and abroad put more emphasis on poetry translating in order to make people in the West understand and enjoy the beauty of these great poems.
In China, there are many excellent translators who have made great contributions to poetry translation, such as Yang Xianyi, Weng Xianliang, and Lin Yutang and so on. Among them, Professor Xu Yuanchong is an outstanding translator who has not only put forward the famous principles in poetry translation but also translated many poems which have been well received. His famous principles of sanmei, sanzhi and sanhua have been regarded as the guidance for poetry translation. He addresses that the first important thing in translation is to reproduce the beauty in sense, secondly beauty in sound, and last beauty in form.
While in the West, Eugene A. Nida, an outstanding translation theorist, is famous for his functional equivalence theory and his contributions to Bible translation. Functional equivalence theory holds the opinion that “translation is reproducing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent of the source-language message, first in terms of meaning, and secondly in terms of style” (Nida and Taber, 1969, p12), and also stresses that “the receptors of the message in the receptor language respond to it in substantially the same manner as the receptors in the source language” (Nida and Taber, 1969, p24). Since it has something in common with “sanmei” principle, many scholars have carried out a lot of researches on this subject, looking for a proper way to translate literal works.
